Diamante Poem

In Hur 4 we have been learning about different types of poems. The one we have been learning about is a diamante poem. Diamante poems are were you get the name of someone or something and you put that word at the top. The next line you put two adjectives about that thing/person. The next line is three words and the words are going to be a verb. Then the next line is what that thing/person does. Before you do anything else you put for the last line something that's bad or the opposite of the first word/thing. Then go back to the other line and write three verbs. The last line is very obvious what you do. You write two objectives. We had to do one but about a story we read. Here's my diamante poem. The story was the Taniwha in the Rakaia gorge.

Taniwha

Clever, brave

Hard working, helping, splashing

Cleans the water for everyone to use

Blowing, whistling, howling

Rude, mean

Nor west wind/Te Maru

Tapa cloth. Tuna i te Rangi

In Hur 4 what is poetic arts we have been making Tapa cloth. Tapa cloth is where you soak and beat bark and spread it out to make a cloth like material. Then you put some patterns on it. It's a pretty fun thing to do. We made a draft and made a good copy after that. Then we had to make a haiku about our Tapa cloth. The things we drew was some stuff about the story we read and some of the stuff in the story. The story is called the creation of tuna. It's an awesome story. There was the one from the book and the one from a video. More about the Tapa cloths is that there are dozens of different cultures that do it. Now even more about the creation of tuna is that tuna in English is eel. Tuna came down from his dry heavens and immediately swam into a lake what was named Muriwai o whata. His name was Tuna i te Rangi. He lived there for many years. He swam under someones legs and got stuck in a trap. He got taken and cut up into four pieces. They all got thrown into different places. The head turned into the Conger eel, the tail turned into the blind eel and the lamprey eel and the other body parts turned into the fresh water eel. That's all and here's my haiku and my Tapa cloth. In it is eels, a sun, hinaki in a river, A river, a tree and a pa/marae. If you see any mistakes that don't make sense or any lines please tell me.

The bullet

Today in Hur 2 we had to read a book of our choice and then answer some questions about it. That's what this blog post is about. There are six questions. Also the two main characters are Rodney and Charmaine. Here are all the questions from one to six in a row.

Do you think Rodney cares who or what the bullet was meant for? Why do you think that?
I don't think Rodney cares at all who the bullet was meant for and he thought it was really cool because he said to his sister said, "It may be dangerous!" But Rodney thought she was just being jealous.

What clues can you find in the text that will help you to understand why the boy might be with the police? Cause hes been dealing stuff he shouldn't have been. He was also trying to give a kid a cigarette and maybe had a whole gun in the car.

Why doesn't he look cool anymore? What has changed? He doesn't have the bullet anymore and he was only wanting to cool cause he had the bullet and he sort of wanted friends.

What is Charmaine's opinion of the boy? What does she mean by, "Guys like him"? Do you agree with her? Why or why not? I agree with her because the boy could not be doing stuff that is legal and might be dealing drugs.

What do you think Rodney has learned from the events in the story? Not to talk to strangers and don't listen to people who are trying to give stuff to you for money cause it could mean a bad thing in the end.

What do you think the author's theme or message was? What is your response to this? The message is not to randomly pick up stuff off the ground and not listen to strange people you don't trust. I really liked how they put the message in a story instead of doing it the boring way by just writing it down on a poster like thing.

Creation of tuna

In Hurumanu 4 what is poetic arts. We have to answer some questions and then put them on our blog. But first we had to watch/listen to a video to understand all the questions. In total there are five questions. Here are the answers to the questions.

The problem Tuna o Runga I te Raki he had was that it was so dry because of the sun.

What is a hinaki? What does tipua mean??
A hinaki is a type of net for tuna/eels. They would put some bait in and put it in the water. It only had one entrance and the whole thing was woven.
Tipua basically means demon cause all the things about it is strange, terrifying, abnormal and supernatural.

What type of animal is a tuna?
A tuna is a type of eel but the Maori way of saying it. You can see them in willow bank and in some streams. There are some near the Margaret mahy playground.

Compare the art from the book and art from the video clip. what are some differences?
In the video clip its more black and white and not colour full. It looks like it is drawn. It has less detail.
In the book its more colourful and looks like its painted not drawn. It has more detail.

I like the art style of the video cause you can see more of what actually happens.

Word Art

In wananga we have been making a word art with all the emotions that we felt at home in the lock down or when you came back to school. We had an emotion wheel to help us pick out some emotions. I think I went a little overboard but that doesn't really matter.

I felt weird when I had to go out for a walk.
I felt weird during the recent lock down event when I had to go outside for a walk to look for teddy's because there wasn't many people walking around, there was only people inside out of site and if there
was people walking they were people we didn't know.

Level 2 in school

A few days ago we entered lvl 2. It's an exiting thing we can go back to school and everyone can do their jobs. But at school there are some rules you have to follow. They are easy even though they may seem hard here are to easy things to follow at school.

Facts about Puffins

Today at home we get to choose something we wanted to learn or do. I decided to do one what was were you got to choose an animal you wanted to research about and then put all the stuff you found out into a Dlo. I wanted to learn about some things about Puffins. Here is the Dlo.

Multiple Sentences

In Hur 3 we have been learning about some different sentences. We have learnt about W-Starts, Adverb Starts and Very short sentences. W-Starts is were you start with one of these words, When, Where, while and whilst. Adverb start is where you start with an adverb. The adverb or word has to end with the letters ly. A Very short sentence is just a really small sentence that gives you suspense or drama.

The boy slowly placed the seed.

The teacher grabbed the seeds.

W-Start...

While the the teacher handed out the seeds, the students grabbed a beaker.

When he put the seed in, he Walked over to the table.

Adverb start...

Carefully, the boy put the beaker down.

Anxiously, the students waited for the seed to grow.

Adverb Start

Today in Hur3 we have been learning about Adverb starts. We first had to practice on our W-starts. I W-start if you don't know is where the first word start with a W. You have to choose out of While, Whilst, Where and When. Then we learnt what a Adverb start was. A adverb is a word that ends with the letters, "ly" Carefully, carelessly and quickly are some of them. We had to do all this with a white board and pen.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

In Hur1 we watched a video and we got a sheet we had to fill out. This time it was a different sheet but it was still based of the treaty of Waitangi. Here are 10 question and answers from the sheet. The population of the Maori in the late 1830's was around 70,000 and 80,000. The population was around 100,000. The main reasons was because of war and diseases. The main settlement was called Kororareka or Russell. Why the treaty of Waitangi was neglected by almost being set on fire, burred, Rats munching on it and water damage. 500 Rangatira signed the treaty of Waitangi. Sovereignty means leadership and some other things but the main thing is leadership. Tino Rangatiratanga means having your own authority.

A problem with the treaty was that the translation was messed up. A part in the English version was not the same as the Maori side. For the Maori side it said, "You will still have ownership over your land." But in the English version it said, "The crown will have complete control over the land." and basically control over nearly everything. The thing to help resolve a situation was they made the united tribes of NZ. The British saw the France as an enemy because of War and colonisation.

Different types of sentences

In Hur3 we have been learning about different types of sentences like Very short sentences. We had so make a simple sentence into a complex sentence. That was the start of our paragraph. We had to do one very short sentence and 2 W-starts sentences. The W-start is where you choose a word out of When, Where, Whilst and while. Here is my paragraph... 

This morning he ran away yelling in the forest madly. He ran and ran as fast as he could. Beside the river, beside a lake and into a swamp. The boy sat down to rest as well as eat something. He heard it. He heard something that changed his life. Gun fire! The boy got down and hid from the enemy team. Whilst he got up in a good position to snipe them, he got hit, “Hit!” the boy shouted and put his hand up. While he was walking back to respawn, he knew someone was following him. “Could I just respawn?!” The boy whispered.

Summary of New Zealand History.

Today in we watched a video and it had answers to a sheet we got. We had to answer them while we watched the video. Here are the questions and the answer. Abel Tasman was the first explorer to arrive in Aotearoa and he arrived in 1674. He named it Nova Zealandia. The second explorer was captain James Cook and he arrived in 1769. He also had a chief navigator to help him. The chief navigators name was TuPaia. The Explorers brought over Potatoes, Pigs, Ship rats and disuses. There was also a question that said whats a musket? Well a musket is a type of rifle that uses gunpowder. And there was a big musket war. The musket war ended in the late 1830's. The ratio Maori and Pakeha was 1 Pakeha equals 40 Maori. What do you know about the Maori History?

Simple to Complex Sentences

In Hur3 for writing we have Practising  on our Sentences. This is also a practice for the assessment that is coming up. For the sentences we have been changing some words and adding more detail to them. The example was The cat sat on the mat. Then they added and adjective, when, where and how. Then we had to do the same. But our first sentence was, The dog ate. It was hard to figure out what to do for the adjective. Have you done this before? Here's my work...

Buddy class/school and what does Empathy mean?

In HR we had a scavenger hunt to find out which class is our buddy class and we had to learn what does Empathy mean. This is about like we do art and writing and then we send it to them. We have a kit/box full of all the stuff we need. There's a bunch of 3-D glasses. All of this is for the book of the road. We also got, a page with stuff what we need the 3-D glasses for. Now onto the scavenger hunt. The teachers put up a slide of some clues. We could do anything to find out what school/class it was. The first clue was the school was on state highway one. then another of the clues was the school was in the north island. One of the last clues was that the school was in Cambridge. The school is St Peters in Cambridge Nz. St Peters is a private school. Empathy is where you are respectful and kind to others. It's also where you listen to others feelings and ideas. What do you know about St Peters?

Procedural Writing

Today in Hurumanu 3 we learnt about procedural writing. Procedural Writing is where you write down what your materials are at what your ingredients are. Then you write the steps on how to make or do something. We had to find out the ingredients and materials well mainly what we had for breakfast. Then we had to do a step by step on how you make your breakfast. Then we had to do a conclusion. The conclusion is where we had to say what was easier and what you can also do. Here's my Procedural Writing.

Yoghurt and plain bread

Materials

• Bag of bread
• Yoghurt
• Spoon
• plate

Ingredients

• 1 or 2 pieces Bread
• 1 Yoghurt

Steps: Grab a spoon from the drawer or cupboard

Then grab your Yoghurt out of the fridge and put the spoon with your Yoghurt on the bench/breakfast table.

Next get the bag of bread out of the cupboard as well as a plate.

After that put all of the stuff on the bench/breakfast table.

Then open the bag of bread and take out 1 or 2 pieces of bread and put the pieces on your plate.

Now you can open your Yoghurt and enjoy your breakfast.

Conclusion: I recommend having 2 pieces of bread because it fills you up more. It’s actually easier if you also grab a drink so you can eat the bread better.

Tangata Whenua. Who are we Hurumanu.

Today in Hur 1 we got to watch a video. It was about Tangata Whenua. While Answering questions on the sheet we got given. Here is one of the questions. The stuff they brought to NZ was some crops like Kumara, taro and mullberries. It was hard to hear the answers so the teacher/'s wrote it down on the board. It was so we didn't forget and we could find out what some of the answers were.

One of the other question was how did the Moa go extinct. They got hunted by the Moari and the rats and dogs killed the eggs. The Moa only laid one to two eggs a year. In the movie a couple chased a giant Octopus who has been stealing all their fish. They stumbled upon Aotearoa. They called it that because of the clouds in the sky above the island.
